Why Is The BRICS Summit 2026 Important?
The BRICS Summit 2026 is significant not just because several world leaders are arriving in Delhi, but because the grouping is becoming an increasingly important platform for the Global South. The 11-member BRICS now brings together major economies, energy producers and emerging markets from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. The grouping accounts for more than a quarter of the global economy and nearly half of the world’s population.
For India, the summit is particularly important as New Delhi is hosting the grouping at a time of major geopolitical and economic uncertainty. India assumed the BRICS chairship on January 1, 2026, for the fourth time, and this year also marks 20 years of BRICS. India has chosen the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability", guided by the vision of “Humanity First".
BRICS 2026: Trade, Economy And Supply Chains
Economic cooperation will be one of the major areas of discussion. India has pushed for more resilient and diversified supply chains, greater trade in services, stronger participation of MSMEs in global trade and easier access to trade finance. These issues are particularly important as countries look to reduce vulnerabilities caused by geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global trade.
