Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi and several senior leaders were detained while attempting to cross police barricades during a protest demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s removal.

Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and several senior party leaders were detained on Friday while attempting to cross police barricades during a protest demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The Congress had taken out a march from its state headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan, towards the Chief Electoral Officer’s office, where the protesters planned to burn an effigy of the CEC.

Congress Marches Towards CEO Office

The Congress, led by Gogoi, had taken out a march from its state headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan, and planned to proceed towards the Chief Electoral Officer’s office. The protesters also planned to burn an effigy of the Chief Election Commissioner.

Police had installed barricades near Rajiv Bhawan to prevent the protesters from proceeding further. Gogoi and other senior Congress leaders attempted to cross the barricades, following which they were detained, according to police.

Congress Alleges ‘Forceful’ Arrests

Congress spokesperson Bedabrata Bora alleged that the party leaders were “forcefully arrested" during the protest.

Bora also claimed that the action represented “yet another threat to democracy". .

The protest comes amid a political controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. A report published earlier this week said Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on at least 14 occasions over 10 months concerning decisions related to voter registration and electoral-roll management.

The reported concerns included changes to Form 6, voter deletions and additions, access to electoral-roll databases and aspects of the SIR process.

The Election Commission, however, has rejected the suggestion of a split within the poll panel, saying such discussions are part of its normal functioning and that decisions on the SIR were taken with the approval of all three commissioners.
