EV users in Keralam call for uniformity in charging tariff

Wide variations in tariffs at private electric vehicle (EV) charging stations have triggered complaints from users across Keralam, with EV owners calling for greater transparency and a uniform pricing mechanism for public charging infrastructure.

Users say tariffs vary considerably between charging stations and operators, with peak-hour charging proving particularly expensive at some locations. Some fast-charging stations charge up to ₹25 per kWh during peak hours, according to EV users.

“Many are shifting to electric vehicles because of the huge reduction in daily fuel expenses. People who travel long distances feel the impact of the varying tariffs at charging stations. Many stations charge a more reasonable rate when they begin operations,” says Badusha Siddique, a Kozhikode resident who owns two electric cars. He says a uniform tariff structure is needed instead of leaving pricing entirely to individual operators.

The use of multiple mobile applications to access different charging stations is another concern among users. Reneesh Joseph, an EV owner from Changaramkulam, says motorists often have to download separate applications to use charging stations operated by different companies. With UPI-based payment facilities already widely available, users should not be required to maintain multiple applications and wallets merely to charge their vehicles, he says.

Users also raise concerns about parking space and other basic facilities at some charging stations. P.V. Rafeeq, an electric car owner from Eranhipalam, says some recently opened stations in the Malabar region have limited space for vehicles to manoeuvre and park while charging.

S. Muhseena, an EV user from Idukki, calls for a common, government-monitored platform for public charging stations if direct digital payment options are not provided. Having to use multiple applications creates confusion, while some platforms also require users to recharge their wallets before charging, she says.

Charging station operators, however, reject allegations of arbitrary pricing. A managing partner of a charging station in Thrissur says operators charge tariffs permitted for the respective facilities and that users can opt for slower charging, where available, if they want to reduce costs.

“Many charging station operators are new entrepreneurs who support the growth of electric mobility by providing charging connectivity. The sector is still evolving,” he says. According to him, greater competition among charging stations can eventually bring more uniformity to tariffs as more operators enter the market.
