The Congress Party has chosen H.C. Yogesh, former member of Shivamogga City Corporation, who contested for Shivamogga assembly seat on the Congress ticket in the 2023 assembly elections, to head the Shivamogga District Congress Committee.

The 48-year-old Yogesh hails from the family associated with the Congress for many years. His father H.M. Chandrashekharappa was elected to the State assembly from Shivamogga constituency in 1999.

Mr. Yogesh earlier served as secretary of the Youth Congress. In the 2023 Assembly election, he lost to S.N. Channabasappa of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The All India Congress Committee, on Wednesday, cleared the names for 35 District Congress Committees. Mr. Yogesh replaces R. Prasanna Kumar, former MLC, who had held the post since April 2024.

There were many contenders for the post, including former Minister Kimmane Rathnakar. The party had sent its observers to collect the opinions of the party workers before finalising the name.

Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa, who is also Minister in-charge of Shivamogga district, has congratulated Mr. Yogesh on being chosen to head the party’s organisation in the district. “The appointment of a young leader as president of the DCC has made me happy. I am confident that he will take the lead in strengthening the party organisation in the district,” he said.
