Veeramani’s judicial custody extended till Oct. 9 in POCSO Act case

A POCSO Special Court in Chennai on Friday (September 25, 2026) extended the judicial custody of octogenarian business magnate R. Veeramani of Gem Granites till October 9 in connection with the case relating to the alleged sexual abuse of minor girls.

Earlier in the day, the Tamil Nadu police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising women officers to investigate the sensational POCSO Act case involving the Gem Granites chairperson.

Mr. Veeramani and his alleged accomplices Shanthi and Mahendra Simhan were arrested on August 29 and remanded in Puzhal Central Prison after a case was registered by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) for paedophilia.

Two senior IPS officers, who were at the helm in the Chennai Police Commissionerate when a complaint Mr. Veeramani of indulging in predatory sexual behaviour targetting minor girls first surfaced, were on Thursday (September 24, 2026) removed from their posts. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K. Manivasan, in an order, said A. Arun, ADGP, Tamil Nadu Police Academy, and N. Kannan, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore, were being transferred from their posts with immediate effect and placed on compulsory wait.

The case against Mr. Veeramani originated with a complaint filed by a child rights activist of an NGO based at Anna Nagar, Chennai, with the Inspector of the Immoral Traffic Prevention Unit (ITPU) on October 6, 2025.
